What's the best used car for £5k?

I need to buy a used car for around £5000 to £6000. It must be larger than the Nissan Note and return decent fuel economyas I'll be doing lots of two hour drives. What do you suggest I look at?

If you do a lot of two hour drives you could risk a diesel, but few £5000 - £6000 diesels will be problem free. Maybe a Toyota Auris 1.4D-4D. Auris hybrids not quite down to £6000. Avensis 1.8i Valvematic petrol better than 2.2 or 2.0 diesel. Consider a Honda Civic 1.8i . They will do 45mpg on a run, have lots of room inside and are decent to drive.

Practical and comfortable cabin, huge amounts in interior space, great 2.2 i-CTDi diesel engine, well built and reliable, enjoyable to drive.
Decent combination of ride and handling that might suit some people better than a harder sprung Golf or a Civic. A few inches taller than a Golf of Focus so easier to get in and out.
Solid car. Sophisticated multi-link suspension deliberately unstressed for long life. Quite quick T180 diesel from July 2006.
