A previous thread mentioned the shortage of HGV drivers.

But if there is a shortage of ship's officers and crews there might not be any need for more HGV drivers!

Nothing new here. The UK shipping industry has long been abandoned by ship owners and shipping cos. They prefer cheapest every time.

Same rules apply. There is a reason why most ships officers are Asian these days. They are the cheapest at the moment.

Many years ago I served as an Officer on a British flagged vessel, after some years I left the industry to work on land. Some years later I tried to return, I was offered a job as engineer on a British flagged vessel, but the Union would not register me, therefore I couldn't obtain the job
