Why so many spams? - movilogo

Lately there are too many spams in this forum.

This type of spams are often quite easy to control. Most forums typically don't allow posts from new accounts unless someone moderates it.

Isn't there similar feature here?

This issue has been brought up a good number of times over the past few years (just do a search on the forum to see). I think that the main issue is that the site doesn't have the resources to do as others do because the forum is run FOC and, compared to others, has more posts and less moderators, especially as ours are non-paid volunteers.

What doesn't help is that most spammers are from the other side of the world and thus their first 'spam' post will drop in the middle of the night. Our mod(s) will likely have too much to do to moderate every new member, especially as many spammers tend to try and get around what you suggest by deliberately posting innocuous responses like 'I agree with you' and suchlike.

After the occasional uptick in spam (which often happens around the Christmas and New Year period), things tend to settle down again once the mod(s) and IT bods get up to speed and bab / block people as required. I'd say that things are generally a lot better on this front than 5 years ago, when we regularly saw large numbers of spam threads and posts.

I suspect it helped when we had two mods rather than just one, to share out the load overall, especially as mods are often posting their own comments on issues as well as moderating.

I suspect that the big amount of spam threads posted over the last 12 hours will be gone by tomorrow the latest.

ORB the other Mod was up before the birds so was highly effective at killing off anything that came in during the early hours. Much of it seems to be from the far East so hits the forum around 2am to 5am UK time.

There could be software improvements but I think we just have to work with what we have.

There has been a noticeable increase in the last few days, I emailed the IT dept. a couple of days ago to see if they can do anything. I think last time we complained they were able to run a spam filter update.

Last thing at night I check all the new account registrations and disable any that look suspect but it's very hard to determine especially as I can't see IP addresses which would help.

I am a member of several car forums currently and none seem to have the issue this forum has. All are free so its not that we are paying for better software.

Some years ago I was member of a Seat Forum (there were others) and that was terrible and the moderators did nothing, that forum disappeared.

I think Skidpan that the main difference is the visibility of this website compared to less well-known (outside of UK car owners from each make or on specific topics) forums, especially those that don't have a journalistsic main function.

It probably doesn't have the income (at the moment) under the current climate in the motor industry to afford to revamp the site and to hire more salaried staff (including moderators) to add to Xileno's excellent volunteer work plus the presumed assistance of the site's I.T. person (who may not work for them full time) as required.

Most 'fan' type sites (owners' clubs, etc) that are country-specific outside of the US rarely get bothered with spam to a great degree because it's probably not worth the time and effort by the spammers - they are too small fry.

Internationally-known site, as this appears to be (possibly because of the similarlity in name to the US dot com version, hence why we regularly get Americans asking for US-specific advice on the forum not knowing its a British website) would attract more attention.

The other problem is that all it takes is for ONE person - a forum member or (pardon the pun) backroom staff - to get hacked or suchlike that their entire email address book (including the HJ site email contacts) could then fall into the hands of interweb nasty people, who often sell such details onto fellow criminals all over the globe.

For the ordinary person, it's much easier to stop the spam, etc by changing passwords and even email address, but for a website, once your details are out there, there's little you can do.

Websites with forums that bring in larger ad revenue can more easily afford more staff and software to reduce spam. The problem is that many of them are also much more censorious, especially because they use autocensor software which often kills useful debates and conversations as well as the bad and/or spam.

I know of a good few MSM and more independent forums and comments areas below articles where the autocensor software deletes or moderates to death (hours before a post gets 'allowed') essentially innocuous comments but allows blindingly obvious spam, again and again. Users find that even more infuriating that what occasionally happens here, which is terms of severity is far less.

They're the wrong kind of escort.

Prolific again tonight.

Do they have some sort of auotmated method of posting so many new threads, wouldn't have thought possible results to be cost effective otherwise but what do i know.

If they worked that efficiently at a proper job they'd be doing alright without spamming forums.

Certainly a lot is automated, unfortunately it seems to arrive after I've gone to bed!

Looking at the site 14.40 today you are not going to get much sleep! You must have annoyed these people

What I don't understand is why they persist. I can't believe any of us would be that niave to believe the spam posts and actually visit / spend money / give our details to said 'people'.

For my experience, spam tends to work on those who have very limited abilities with computers, and via direct emails or phopnecalls rather than on web forums where at least one member can flag suspicious posts or threads, never mind mods or IT staff of the website itself.

No need to pay for any new software: www.stopforumspam.com/

I will say it again, no other forum I visit has a Spam fest like this one. But most of those have updated to new platforms in recent years. They are all free so its clearly not a cost issue for them.

It depends upon the types of forum and whether the site does anything else. Small scale forums with no journalistic element would likely be far easier to change, mainly because they are platformed on free to use or cheap cloud-based architecture.

That may not be possible here, especially if migrating away from the existing (presumably in-house, self-contained) platform would be prohibitively expensive or might result in significant amounts of legacy data being lost. Bear in mind this site goes back 20 years at least, and I suspect income is not great for them at the present time.

If you have any specific examples that may work on both a technical front and economically, please let the mods / IT guys know. They have asked before for any such suggestions for improvements.

I'm grateful for xileno, who must've had their work cut out today to delete a couple of pages (at least) of spells. Let's hope they don't put a hex on.

Why so many spams? - Xileno

I've just removed a whole load more from the Motoring forum. All the automated spam is highly irritating. If there's no improvement in the next couple of days then I will contact IT again to see if anything else can be done. In the meantime I will do my best to remove all this nonsense.

Looks like 'Jim1994' is doing it the old fashioned way by posting individual spam posts on the technical forum under the 'Ford Codes' threads today.
