Range Rover sport SDV6 TDV6 Engine - Range Rover sport - engine seizure - MLF 2023
We bought a 2nd hand Range Rover from a local LR dealer. It’s a 68 plate, so is 4.5 years old and currently has around 65k on the clock. We were driving it last week and the engine light came on, then the oil light and then it just cut out. We haven’t been able to get it started since - despite the AA and the dealership technician trying. They have said that the engine has seized and it’s likely we will need a new engine! I can’t believe this would happen after on 4.5 years and a relatively low ish mileage. It had a full service history with LR servicing. The dealership say that as it’s outside of the 3 year warranty we will have to pay for a replacement engine. Is there no recourse to LR as the manufacturer for this? Is this a common problem with this model? Just looking for any advice.

Sorry to say, yes, it's common for all Land Rover products to have major issues. They are the UK's least reliable car brand. A lot of people are in your position and JLR aren't interested in doing anything about it.

There are no doubt specialist forums and Facebook groups where people are trying to come up with a plan but, for now, your best bet is probably.to get the engine replaced, sell the car and never buy one of their products again.

You need to study the Consumer Rights Act (CRA) 2015 - your rights are against the selling dealer, not LR, and warranty expiration is irrelevant.

If the fault has occurred within 6 months of purchase, it would be up to the dealer to prove that the fault didn't exist at time of sale.

I think it could be said that the reason JLR offers a 3-year warranty - rather than the 5 or 7 years offered by other makers - is that failures start to occur soon afterwards. The pity is that owners like yourself only look at sites like this when something nasty happens. If you had been a 'regular' before buying this car you might have chosen differently :-(

Who would want to be a JLR dealer ? .....

Point well made!! Much more research needed next time we buy a car .. going back to trusty Kia !!

Odds on the crankshaft has snapped - the design is (very) weak. All the gory details here:

How long ago did you buy it?

Unfortunately it’s over 12 months old so expect problems. Recent I’ve heard is a failed engine pulley on an 18 month old Defender. Damage extensive.

Thanks for the you tube link… exactly what the technician did - tried to start engine manually, but completely seized. Bought it a year and a half ago from the dealer. No more Land Rovers for me! Learnt my lesson!!

My friend was successful in persuading JLR to replace the auto box on his 2018 F pace.

Reduced the bill from £12K to his contribution £3k.

But it’s no use emailing here and there . It’s a matter of visiting the service department on a regular basis to progress your claim for an out of warranty contribution.

All in all it took over three months to get a result !

£12k for an autobox!

its clown world i tell you, despite its thirst we're sticking with the trusty Landcruiser never mind the £12k the £3k alone buys an awful lot of fuel difference.

In the vid I posted, the original owner was quoted around £30k for the engine fix (not sure if that was rebuild or replace).

Hello

just found this on google

My 68 reg Range Rover, with a mileage of only 24,000, experienced a recurring problem where the engine suddenly stopped while I was driving on the motorway. I towed it to a Land Rover service centre, where they confirmed that the engine had seized. The repair cost is estimated at £38,000.

reported by them
Carried out investigation into non start, found starter trying to engage. Plugged in Topix cloud found engine obstructed or blocked fault code. Checked oil and coolant levels found correct. Removed engine oil filter and found metal in filter. attempted to turn vehicle by hand unable to turn engine sized. Requires new engine, torque converter and turbos to rectify

it was serviced by them 7-8 months ago and after service it did 1400miles

Now they want £500 to put the claim to Land Rover, which may be accepted.

am really upset:(

Local farmers had the same thing happened and found an engine specialist who rebuilt the engine on one of these after it seized at a cost of £9k.

The rebuild lasted a matter of weeks after which they sc***ped the car and bought a Toyota Hi lux which they are extremely pleased with and which they will stick with in future . Ideal for delivering hay to sheep in all sorts of terrain .

Is this the V6 based on a Ford V8 block with 2 cylinders blanked off?

The YouTube guy "Ido cars" recently stripped a seized one of these, rod bearings had chewed up, oil pickup full of bits, few parts salvageable.

Biggest load of carp I have read in a while. Where is this farmer who is wiling to spend £9000 on anything and sc*** it after a few weeks? They are all paupers as we are frequently told.

Well we can only work with what has been posted, steveieb won't have made it up. It does seem a bit odd though to spend that much. Maybe the 9k was the dealer quote?

What surprises me more is there's masses of info about LR out there on the web. Why do people sign up for it and then wonder why they have problems?

I've never seen a farmer ride a bike.

Not all. Many have flocks of less than 500, some have flocks of over 5,000.

The v6 derived from the v8 is the petrol engine. This will be the Ford AJD/Peugeot/JLR engine.

£38k for a new engine? You could get a couple of Tesla batteries for that!
