Is a Toyota Hilux on an £8000 budget going to be reliable?

I’m looking to purchase a Toyota Hilux in the next few months but only have £8k to spend. I've seen that a few are available with 100,000+ miles and despite the bulletproof reliability, thought I’d check to see if it’s possible to buy into that reliability within my budget? Also is there any preference to engine size regarding reliability?

Servicing is key to buying a reliable second-hand Toyota Hilux. And that means choosing a vehicle with a comprehensive history folder that shows it's been sensibly maintained.

The Hilux has a few reported issues around the common-rail injection system. It’s usually caused by poor-quality fuel, with low-grade diesel not working well with the injectors. It’s more common on the 3.0-litre than the 2.5-litre. The cam belt should be changed at 90,000 miles and it’s wise to have the water pump replaced at the same time - the seller should have paperwork to show this has been done
