Peugeot Boxer fuel pump failed and caused major damage - can I make a claim?

I have a 2017 Peugeot Boxer Euro 6 2.0-litre HDI with only 26,000 mileage. The fuel pump failed (broken tooth) which caused stress on the camshaft, which broke the belt, which caused loads of damage. It needs new rockers, cam, fuel pump and perhaps more if the valves were damaged!

My van has been serviced twice and is well looked after. I cannot believe this has happened and wonder if I have any redress from Peugeot as although it's out of warranty the mileage is really low and the van is not even five years old.

Have you identified what has caused the fuel pump to fail? If it's caused by a manufacturing fault then you may have grounds to claim against the dealer that sold you the van. The seller may also make an application for a 'goodwill payment' from Peugeot UK if the van has a full service history with Peugeot dealers.

However, before considering any form of claim, it's important to note that fuel pumps can fail for a number of reasons. A common cause is bad fuel or some other type contaminant getting into the fuel. Given the low mileage of your van (which suggests you cover just 5000 miles a year) there would be a high risk of residue building in the fuel tank and damaging the fuel pump. If this has happened then you'll have no claim to make against the seller.
