Buying a new van – should I go large or small?

I’m an electrician in need of a new van. I occasionally carry large items and work mostly in towns and cities. Can you recommend a good van? I can’t make up my mind between something large, like the Ford Transit, or something smaller, like the Volkswagen Caddy. I need something that will easily carry all my tools and the occasional work platforms and ladder. What do you recommend?

Big vans cost a lot to run, so only buy one if you really need it. A smarter option would be to get something smaller and fit a roof rack to carry your ladders and platforms. The van will be cheaper on fuel in the long run and you’ll have less hassle parking it. You can get a roof rack from Rhino: www.rhinoproducts.co.uk.

Van wise, there’s a lot to choose from, but if you want something that’s compact and good value for money then I’d suggest the Ford Transit Connect or Nissan NV200. If you have more to spend then the Volkswagen Caddy is also worth investigating.
