What's the law on van speed limits?

My pal has a Ford Escort van and his wife runs a Fiat light van, I think it's a Doblo. One has been given the taxation class 'Private/Light Goods', the other 'Light Goods Vehicle'. The difference seems to be the date of first registration but he'd like to know if the two vehicles are subject to different speed limits on single/dual carriageways and motorways. Can you shed any light on this?

The Escort van is probably regarded as a 'car derived van' and that lifts its limit to 60mph on single carriageway roads, the same as a car. A van derived van, such as a Doblo or a Berlingo, is limited to 50mph.

Is it correct that the law states that speeds are 10mph less on some UK roads for vans? I don't see many comply, including myself, and I have 45+ years experience driving vans.
