An engine replacement for my van has taken seven weeks to sort out - is that fair?

My 2014 Ford Transit is fully serviced, but blew a piston (or that's what we were told). The issue happened with six weeks warranty left, but I've been waiting nearly seven weeks for new engine. Ford refuse to supply a replacement van because my van is now out of warranty. I have no idea when my van will be back on the road because Ford can't give me an estimate for delivery of the engine. Ford said they would consider a replacement hire vehicle, but because the warranty has now ran out they are refusing. What should I do?

Write to the dealer principal and lodge a formal complaint. Send the letter by recorded delivery and outline the problems you've had and costs incurred, by your van being off the road for seven weeks. Demand a like-for-like replacement vehicle while your van is being fixed. If they refuse, inform the dealer that you'll hold them liable for the costs incurred for renting a vehicle until the work is complete - that should prompt them into finding you a temporary van. Otherwise you'll need to take legal advice on suing them to recover the costs incurred by renting a vehicle. Waiting two months for an engine replacement is unacceptable.
