Mercedes-Benz refuses to comment on future of X-Class pick-up

Mercedes-Benz is refusing to comment on the future of the X-Class pick-up after reports surfaced that it was to be axed after disappointing sales.

The X-Class was launched in the UK in 2018 and received favourable reviews for its off-road ability, comfort and 3.5 tonne towing limit. Yet, the one-tonne pick-up which is based on the Nissan Navara and starts from £47,412 (including VAT), has reportedly failed to find favour with buyers.

According to an industry newspaper, Automotive News, the X-class pick-up has been earmarked for the axe, with Mercedes-Benz's parent company, Daimler, seeking to reduce costs amid profit warnings.

The industry publication claims that just 16,700 units of the X-Class were sold in 2018 in Europe, Australia and South Africa - a figure that's well below key rivals, with Ford selling almost 17,000 Rangers in the UK in 2018 alone.

Daimler UK has refused to discuss the future of the X-Class, however, with a spokesperson telling Honest John Vans that it "does not comment on speculation".

In July, Mercedes-Benz recalled over 2000 X-Class models after it emerged that the incorrect mounting instructions had been supplied for retrofitting trailer coupling.
