Can I fit a 'deflector' behind my car's grill to protect the a/c condenser from damage?

I replaced the aircon condenser in my BMW 320 at a price of £463. The condenser is located immediately behind the front grill, which a stone entered causing the damage. Can any 'deflector' be fitted behind the grill to protect this very vulnerable unit?

The problem of the condenser and stone damage has been discussed on many forums over a number of years. Some dealerships (via BMW UK) have been replacing them without charge. The design is the problem, but as yet we are not aware of a BMW solution. Other than designing your own (wire meshing clipped to the condenser) there is nothing forthcoming from BMW.
