What are the advantages of bigger wheels?

I'm baffled by the different wheel sizes on offer for the same model of car. Often the higher spec models have bigger wheels. Are there any advantages to these bigger tyres, which seem to be considerably more expensive?

Very few in most cases. Sometimes they improve the cornering grip of the car at the expense of poorer ride and the greater risk of damage, as well as the higher cost of replacements. Generally (not always) the more tyre between the rims and the road, the more comfortable and longer lasting the tyres will be. I personally favour 55-60 profile. No deeper, no shallower.
