The MoT Files 2017: 10 worst vans for passing the first MoT

There are few things more disappointing than seeing your pride and joy score a big fat fail at its first MoT. Yet, for thousands of van owners, the first test at three years will present a series of costly problems.

We’ve crunched the Government numbers to uncover vans with the lowest MoT pass rates at the first test. This data is based on Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) figures and covers all three-year-old vans (registered in 2013) that had a minimum of 3000 MoT tests in 2016.

Volkswagen Crafter - 69.9% pass rate

As with many vans in this list, it’s lighting, brakes and suspension that provide some of the highest number of MoT failures at the first test. In the case of the Crafter, it’s two times more likely to stumble on shock absorbers than the national average, while brake failure rates are 76 per cent worse than other 2013 vans.

The Crafter – sold from 2006 to 2017 – was built on the same platform and at the same factory as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, but the Volkswagen fares worse when it comes to the MoT. Volkswagen has since produced an all-new model, but it remains to be seen if this version will improve its fortunes at the MoT.
