New VW California priced from £37,500
The revamped Volkswagen California will cost from £37,657 when it goes on sale next month. That gets you the entry-level Beach model with a 2.0 TDI engine with 102PS. The first campers are due to arrive at the end of the year.
Based on the latest Transporter T6 van, the California comes in two versions. The entry-level Beach model isn't quite a bona fide camper, but does come seven seats and sleeping space for four.
The bench seat folds to convert into a two-berth bed, while a manual pop-up roof provides access to a further double bed. A fold-out table and chairs are cleverly stored in the sliding door and tailgate plus there's an integrated awning. However, there's no stove or fridge.
For that you need the Ocean, which replaces the SE. Prices start at a more hefty £47,840 but it does come with an electro-hydraulic pop-up roof with lighting, plus a kitchenette with two rings, a fridge and sink.
The Beach is available with a 2.0 TDI with 102PS with a five-speed manual gearbox or a 2.0 TDI 150PS with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG transmission.
That 150PS engine is also available in the Ocean or there's a top of the range 204PS version of the 2.0 TDI which is also available with 4Motion four-wheel drive.
Inside, the new California has a more upmarket dashboard (optional on Beach) designed to give a plusher and more car-like feel. There is also a new infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth plus a new multi-function display.
