Canoo open UK head office and confirms 2025 launch

American electric van maker Canoo has announced that it is to open a new UK head office ahead of the brand launching in Britain in 2025.

The company exhibited its futuristic models at the CV Show in Birmingham in April 2024 and will open its new UK head office at the Bicester Motion automotive campus in Oxfordshire in October 2024, making it the company’s first European HQ.

A number of demonstrator vans will also arrive in the UK at the same time, all right-hand-drive because Canoo already makes vehicles in this format for the US Mail Service.

The Canoo model range comprises the Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle (LDV) electric van – already successfully used by NASA, Walmart and US Mail – available as a van in two sizes named LDV190 and LDV130, and as a pick-up.

“Our expansion into the UK is a key milestone in our global growth strategy, enabling us to establish a local presence for our customers to better serve their needs,” said Tony Aquila, Investor, Executive Chairman and CEO of Canoo. “The UK activation centre at Bicester Motion will allow us to leverage the local expertise while strengthening our commercial operations in this high-potential market that provides incentives including the Plug-in Van Grant to help the growing demand and reach the Government’s zero-emissions goals. We look forward to sharing more in the near future.”

Canoo said it will take a customer-centric approach to entering the UK market, including pilots followed by a rollout of vehicles, and the company will work directly with customers to create solutions that meet their specific demands.

What MoT class does a Ford e-Transit require?

I am trying to find out what MoT class a Ford e-Transit 390 comes under? The gross weight is 3900kg but I have had different service centres say variously class 4, class 7 and HGV?
The Department for transport allows a derogation for electric vans, meaning those weighing up to 4.25 tonnes are treated in the same way as diesel vans with a GVW of up to 3.5 tonnes, allowing for the extra battery weight. This applies to both licensing and MOTs, meaning an e-Transit 390 requires a Class 7 MOT.
