Easy to drive, comfortable and capable of hauling heavy loads, the Nissan Navara is the perfect pick-up. It's efficient too, with front-wheel drive versions officially returning 46mpg while four-wheel models provide up to 45mpg. Factor in Nissan's comprehensive five-year-warranty and it's easy to see why the Navara is so popular with UK buyers.
Looking for a no-nonsense single cab pick-up, with rock bottom running costs? The D-Max Utility might be the workhorse for you, with the two-wheel drive version returning an advertised 45mpg. Isuzu also do an all-wheel drive version, which returns an official 40mpg.
The Ford Ranger is the UK's best-selling pick-up. And given its rugged and durable nature, it's easy to see why small businesses rate it so highly. The Ranger is strong, with a 3.5 tonne towing limit and a one-tonne payload, while its advertised 43mpg means you don’t need shares in an oil company to run one as a daily driver.
The L200 is due to be replaced in 2019 with an all-new model. However, as capable and efficient pick-ups go, the L200 is still ranked among the best when it comes to the advertised economy figures with all of the work-focussed 4Life models exceeding 40mpg.
The Fullback is essentially a rebadged L200 and that means it mirrors advertised economy of Mitsubishi's pick-up. Both the 150PS and 180PS versions of the Fiat will officially return close to 41mpg, while standard equipment levels are high will all Fullbacks getting alloy wheels, DAB audio and a tough five-seater double cab.
Few work vehicles can match the Hilux’s durability. Sold all over the world, the tough Toyota has become a byword for mechanical toughness. The latest version is surprisingly economical (by pick-up standards) with double cab models exceeding 40mpg.
Great to drive, wonderfully styled and capable of hauling huge loads, the X-Class is one of the few, truly premium pick-ups on the UK market. Admittedly, it's expensive to buy new, but fuel costs are surprisingly affordable with advertised economy peaking at 37mpg
SsangYong Musso (new)
The latest SsangYong Musso is the only pick-up in the UK to be sold with a seven-year-warranty as standard. This makes it great value, especially when you factor in its modest fuel economy figures with its 2.2-litre turbodiesel returning a smudge short of 36mpg.
Easy to drive, on and off-road, the Amarok V6 returns an advertised 35mpg and will carry over a tonne in payload. Tow weights are not as good as the class leaders, at 3.2 tonnes, but the big, bold Volkswagen has plenty in its locker to offer small businesses and sole traders.
SsangYong Musso (old)
One for used buyers, the old Musso is one of the best compact pick-ups you can buy, with 40mpg and a five-year unlimited mileage warranty included as standard. It can't match the handling or refinement of its pricer rivals, but few second-hand pick-ups can match the old Musso for value.
