Focus alternator?

My 2006 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi has just started making a whining/howling sound coming from the alternator area. When I started the car this morning (first time it happened) the red battery warning light came on, but I risked driving the 15 miles to work. The red light goes off and on every few miles, perhaps on more at low revs. The noise is most apparent between 900 and 1300 rpm.
