How long will the DVLA backlog last

My lease car agreement expires early next year and the car carries my private registration plate. Given the current backlog at DVLA, when would you suggest that I contact the lease company to transfer the plate back to me on retention?

There's no saying how long the DVLA will be suffering delays. Could be sorted within a few weeks or months, could take a while longer than we expect. If it's next year, there's the likelihood that things will (hopefully) be sorted by then - as long as we avoid another lockdown, that is.
