Photocard finishers

I have been reading your column with interest regarding the renewal of 'credit card driving licenses'. Like you, my wife and I were sent renewal forms and paid our £17.50 each and they were received within 10 days or so. Expensive, but otherwise no problem. However, whilst my wife's new one was valid for 10 years, she is 57, mine was valid for only four years, I am 66. I have been trying to find out what happens at 70; all I can find is that I think I take an eye test. Could you enlighten me please? Also, do I have to pay another £17.50 for another license then? That seems like extortion. At least they could extend/reissue the 4 year one for an extra 6 years. I am sure your readers would like your thoughts on these two matters.

You are correct. If you are over 60 when you are issued with a replacement photocard, it only lasts until you are 70, even if you renewed it at age 68, and each renewal will soon go up to £20. Details of what happens at 70 at www.dvla.gov.uk or www.direct.gov.uk/renewalat70 (site sometimes faulty), and renewals after 70 are free.
