Maximus Austinius

I realize that the Austin Maxi has suffered some derision in the past but I do not know why as mine is a nice looking car with plenty of room inside and has lasted 29 years from new. I am only thinking of replacing it now because new parts are difficult to come by and second hand parts have only a short life. I could take advantage of the Government’s scrappage scheme, although it seems a shame to scrap a car that still runs OK so I am undecided whether to purchase a new or second hand car. However, that is not my main problem. The front of my existing car is fairly high off the ground (13”), enabling me to get easily up a sloped pavement into my driveway whereas current car models seem to be fairly low on the ground (around 8-9”), risking scraping, which has deterred visitors from parking in our driveway. Also, my boot is able to transport 4’ width (and fairly long) canvas paintings to exhibitions whereas most current cars have little more than a metre in width due to the position of the wheel arches and other protrusions. I do not need a large people carrier as there will only be my wife and myself normally travelling in the car. Can you recommend any cars (maybe estates), that you think would serve my purpose?

The closest recent car to the Maxi was the previous shape Honda Civic 5 door, which also had the virtue of seats that fold down into a bed. And was, of course, built in the UK.
