Well soaked

Yesterday I noticed water in the rear passenger foot well of my VW Passat saloon. Year is 1999. I am not sure how it got there and I no nothing about cars anyway but I am willing to have a go at rectifying the problem. After reading about the problem here online, I noticed that there is a lot of water in where the battery sits. I can try to get the battery out but not too sure how to get all my electrics working again if I undo the connections. But not sure how to get the battery out of the well.

This is a standard (and quite serious) problem of blocked vent well drains. One is under the battery. The other is in the corner the other side. The quick solution it to get rid of the plastic strainer bungs. Then you have to hope that the water has not done more damage, like penetrated the ECU or rusted through the brake servo.
