I have a 1999 Rover 214 which has just conked out with a head gasket problem, not even having done 50,000 miles. I have been quoted about £800, which also seems to be about the present value of this sort of car. Do you think it makes any sense to repair it? Or what do you think are the top three replacements, using the scrappage scheme. My Rover is 3-door, for town with infrequent motorway use.

Use the extended scrappage scheme to get a Hyundai i30 1.4 Comfort with a 5-year warranty or a KIA Cee'd 1.4 (facelifted for 2010) with a 7-year warranty, or a smaller Hyundai i20 1.2 with a 5-year warranty. The Rover needs to be taxed insured and MoT'd at the time of the deal, even though it doesn't run.
