SEAT Altea has done 20,000 miles, does it need a new alternator?

I have a SEAT Altea 1.9 TDI 2006, which has done 20k miles. The alternator warning light was making a faint glow on the dash.

I took it into the SEAT dealer and at first they couldn't find anything wrong with it after testing the battery and alternator.

Then when I suggested turning on all the electrical items like heaters, lights etc, they said the warning light glowed and that I needed a new alternator at a cost of £373.

Is this right for such a low mileage car or could it be something else like the wires, diodes, serpentine belt?

If its diodes then you need a new alternator anyway. You should ask for a goodwill contribution towards the cost, even just 20 per cent.
