The electric windows keep self-opening on my BMW - what's the cause?

One morning this week I came out the house to find all the windows on my 68 reg BMW 430d Gran Coupe were down. All the doors were locked and nothing was damaged or missing. I know you can open the windows by pressing and holding the key, but that also unlocks the doors which wasn’t the case. I’m worried this may have been a failed theft attempt.

My local BMW dealer had no comment other than if I brought it in they would have a look (for £100!) Can you shed any light? I’ve ordered a Faraday box in the meantime.

The most likely problem here is that there's some damage to wiring between the door and the body control module (BCM) or a fault with the BCM itself. The front BCM is the most likely culprit.

It's a rare but known problem that can occur on all derivates on 3 and 4-Series, usually where wiring has chafed in the door shut area and made a bad connection, but sometimes where the BCM has sustained water damage. Being a known issue on 2013-onward 3 and 4-Series models, and with your car now being out-of-warranty, you should be able to get it investigated much more cheaply by an independent BMW specialist.
