Accident liability and insurance

I was hit up the rear by a lorry while driving in Southampton. It was going faster than me and my car was pushed along the road. The lorry (a car transporter) would not stop and drove into the docks where I could not go. I phoned the haulage company and they finally admitted liability (there was a slight issue as I had taken down the number plate incorrectly) and sent me their insurance details by email. I therefore did not contact the police. They are now denying liability and leaving me to pay the £600 excess. My legal cover is chasing this but to no avail. Is there any other approach I can try?
