Power loss in a Toyota Corolla Verso

I have encountered intermittent power loss from my Corolla Verso, particularly on inclines and from a standing start. Cannot seem to put accelerator far as power seems to drop, come down in gear and all of sudden you get a surge and pedal works again. This is 2004 model, but could it be simial problem encountered in recalled models in 2010?

No, won't be the accelerator pedal switch. If it's a diesel it might be a worn turbo bearing.
