C4 1.6eHDI EGS gearbox problem

I purchased a new C4 with EGS system. It would appear to me that there is a problem on first and second gear in that on the very odd occasion as I have joined an island or pulled out of a junction there has been a situation where the car will start to move forward and then hesitate, leaving me stranded for perhaps two seconds, as if it is not sure what gear to be in.

I have returned the car to the garage for examination and software upgrades on four occasions but as this has only happened on five occasions since March the garage say that they can't do a great deal more. I have a suspicion that there is a fault with this system and that Citroen are just hoping it will go away. I have also tried in vain to get them to investigate as to why I am only getting 41 miles to the gallon, considerably less than what I had been led to believe.

As I have never bought a new car before is there anything more that I can do to resolve this matter?

You are accelerating too hard. This is an automated manual box, not an automatic. So it has mechanisms that change the gears of a normal manual box. To prevent damage to 1st and 2nd gears from torque reaction, the throttle is automatically damped on the upchanges from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. If you try to counter this by pressing the accelerator harder you get the problem you are experiencing.
