Megane auto gearbox problems

I was driving on the motorway at about 70mph when there was a loud clunk, the car lost power down to below 50mph and revs increased. This has happenened twice but the car is ok at low speed around town.

I took it to an automatic gearbox place who've said it will cost between £600-£1,300 plus VAT to repair (he doesn't know till he takes it out to look apparently and says it might need 'reconditioning').

Is this price right? It sounds a LOT! As the car is only worth 2.5-3K I'm not sure what to do as I was looking to sell the car anyway.

So do I: bite the bullet and pay to get it repaired, or will a garage part-exchange it for something despite this fault (I actually want a VW Polo not another Renault), or should I eBay it notifying potential buyers of the fault?

This reads like a servo valve box problem, common with this transmission. The servo valve box controls the gearchanges and the seals can fail. Would be dishonest not to notify any potential buyer of the fault. Cross check with a member of www.fedauto.co.uk or with www.kingautomatics.com . Don't overexpect from a Polo.
