Burning smell from A3 diesel

I have a 2010 Audi A3 2.0TDI Sport with a low mileage (15000). I bought it from an Audi dealer just over one year ago. Earlier this year the engine management system warning light came on. The RAC came out and reset the valve but a few weeks later the same thing happened again. A second RAC rep came out who said that the problem was caused by low mileage and advised me to give the car a 'blow out' down the motorway each week, reset the valve again and left.

Several weeks on, after giving the car a good run each week as instructed, same problem with the car going into limp mode this time. Third RAC rep who this time said it was a faulty valve, took me directly to the Audi garage who replaced the valve and said I wouldhave no further problems.

I am now having what I now recognise as warning signs that this may happen again. After a recent motorway trip (20/30miles) the fan was running when I got home and there was a faint burning smell. I am now reluctant to take the car on anything but short local trips.

Is this a known problem with A3s, is it low mileage, is there anything I should be doing to avoid this please? Any advice would be welcome.

The reason for the fan running and the burning smell was that the diesel particulate filter was regenerating as it should do. Would have been better to have kept driving the car for another 5 - 10 minutes for the regeneration process to complete.

Good choice of engines. Some petrol engines now chain cam. Comfortable and well built interior. cheap to run 1.6 TDI. Feels very refined especially on the motorway.
