I recently suffered a senior moment and put 7 litres of unleaded petrol in my 2009 2.2 diesel X Type Jaguar automatic with DPF. I have had the car for over 3 years and it is first, and hopefully the last time, I have done this. The tank was already 1/4 full. Fortunately, I realised what I was doing, stopped the pump and didn't start the engine.
I was setting off from Norfolk to North Yorkshire the following morning and opted to have the car towed to the local Jaguar dealer to have the car sorted out, which they did promptly within 3 hours of receiving the car. I do not have the level of Green Flag emergency cover to flush out the tank and was quoted £100 by Green Flag, which seemed, in my ignorance, to be expensive.
It was because I didn’t like the idea of breaking down somewhere in the Lincolnshire fens that I opted to have the car flushed out.
I had been unable to contact the local Jaguar dealer in Norwich in advance to enquire whether they could sort the car out and give me an estimate of the cost.
In the event, I picked up my valeted car, all sorted out at 5:30 p.m. at a gut wrenching cost of £210.
Two questions:-
1. I would appreciate your comments on the costs.
2. If I had continued to fill the rest of the tank with diesel, as suggested by some people I have spoken to since, and then every 100 mile or so, filled it up again to dilute the mix, would I have been OK.
