Ford Focus management light
I own a 2003(53) Ford Focus TDCi, and over the past months - now and then even mid journey - it goes a bit sluggish, as if turbo not kicked in! Then lots of black smoke out of exhaust, then speed picks up as if the turbo has kicked in!
When it goes it goes, but two days ago, the engine management light came on for about three seconds, and not been on since. All fluid levels okay as I've checked them. So, why is this?

Black smoke normally indicates that the air to fuel ratio is imbalanced.Either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean air( oxygen) .
So firstly check your air filter, and then also your air intake for any restrictions/blockage/leak.
If all okay then you can either have a diagnostic check carried out,which should indicate the problem by fault code ie P ---- 4 numbers.
Or you could check the following
1.EGR solenoid
2.EGR valve ,mechanical
3.MAF sensor( mass air flow)
4.Injectors - normally need attention around the 100k mark
5.TC ( turbo) wastegate regulating valve
6. TC wastegate
7.MAP ( manifold absolute pressure) sensor
8.IAT ( intake air temp) sensor
9.TC ( boost air temp sensor)
10. CHT ( cylinder head temp sensor)
11. FRP ( fuel rail pressure ) sensor
12 APP( accelerator pedal position ) sensor.
13.ECU
As you can see a lot of things that may be wrong hence the diagnostic check in the first instance.
