Mercedes-Benz ML or Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I was about to replace my Mercedes-Benz ML with the new model when I became aware of the similar (almost identical body, different mechanics) Jeep Grand Cherokee at about two thirds the price.

I have read several reports (and seen the videos) on the Internet of the Jeep failing dramatically the 'Elk' handling test. I am also aware the much-criticised 5-speed automatic gearbox is about to replaced by an all-new 8-speed unit.

I have raised both issues with three different Chrysler dealers, but all deny any knowledge of both issues. Would you risk the Grand Cherokee?

20-inch wheels, tyres and air suspension are essential. Mind you, the Jeep doesn't steer at all well on steel springs and 18-inch wheels, because it feels as if it’s rolling off its tyres.
