My Rover 25 keyfob won't work - why?

There seems to be a problem with the locking system. Battery was bought new 10/09/12. Alternator belt 'went' and battery dead as a dodo 03/03/13. Alternator drive/serpentine belt replaced, power steering belt replaced, driveshaft joint gaiter replace. Battery charged overnight.

01/05/13 (having been driving the car every day although not long distances) tried to unlock via the fob and it didn't work. Had to unlock via the key, and alarm went off. (This is at night and I'm in a hurry as I need to get somewhere on time).

Once I had silenced the alarm there was no response from the engine - dead as a dodo but the inside light was working. The next day I tried again after 're-setting' the fobs. And again today after 're-setting' yet again. Today it is obvious the battery is completely flat, as the is no life in the lights.

As the battery is less than a year old and has recently been charged - am I right to assume that there must be something draining it? Could it be the alternator? (My insurance is basic and does not cover recovery etc., so I'm trying to find out what I can do myself).

Likely to be a failed alternator.
