Belt cam changes on an i30?

Our daughter has a 58 plate belt cam Hyundai i30 2.0 diesel. Her local Hyundai dealer at her last service flatly refused to change the belt at 40K miles (made it clear they thought she didn't know what she was talking about) and said they would not change it before 80K.

Are Hyundai belts better than the rest of the world or are they thinking she has a chain cam engine? She will shortly be coming to stay with us and we intend booking her car in with our local Hyundai dealarship. We'd appreciate your views before we get into another argument - we think the belt should be changed.

I've had no reports of them failing prematurely:

But if the timing belt drives the water pump, that needs replacing at the same time as the belt.

My car's shredded its fan belt. I've just been told by the AA not to drive the car, and that it's unusual for a fan belt to shred. Do you know what would have caused this?
