Upgrading from a Toyota Aygo - what should we buy?

My wife needs to upgrade her three-door Toyota Aygo. She would like to keep small, but safety is important as she’ll be driving our two year old grandson around. I feel upgrading to a Yaris sized car would be necessary for safety, but am I correct in assuming larger models offer better safety for occupants? Or would, say, a five-door Aygo offer similar occupant safety?

You are correct. Not much between the back seat of an Aygo and the back of the car and it only has three stars in NCAP tests. The Yaris in comparison is far safer with five stars.
