Buying a used hatchback - what would you recommend?

I am looking to buy a used car and want to spend £5000. I want something that’s cheap to fix/run and boasts good fuel economy. What would you recommend?

You'll get a 2007 Civic 1.8i for around £5000. Now only is it enormously practical and quite good to drive, but it can do 45mpg.
