Which 4wd vehicle would you recommend for £16,000?

I have £16,000 to spend. Which diesel 4wd car would you recommend? The running costs of the Freelander mean that I am having to sell it, but I could ideally use a 4 wheel drive, just with greater economy and lower running costs.

I'd go for the Nissan Qashqai. It's an excellent car with 4x4 capability and family hatchback running costs. Your budget should buy a 2.0-litre dCi: www.honestjohn.co.uk/deals/?make=Nissan&type=U...1

If you rustle up a few extra quid, or are good at negotiating, the Hyundai ix35 is well worth a look. It's the same sort of car as the Qashqai, has low running costs for a car of this size and gets a five-year unlimited mileage warranty: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/hyundai/ix35-2009?
