Can my 2007 Vauxhall Astra's sump plug have been damaged during servicing?

I just had a 2007 Astra serviced. They said that the thread came out with the sump plug and they had to fit a helicoil. It is a steel sump, so I do not believe them. I had to pay to get the car back. Any advice?

This can and often does happen if the sump plug gets hit by a speed hump. You see the grooves in the humps caused by sump plugs hitting them.
