Can I trust the 1.8TSI Skoda engine?

I have found a very nice 2010 Skoda Octavia L&K DSG with 58,000 miles on the clock. However, the car has the problematic 1.8TSI engine. I've read the bad entries on the Octavia section and the 'oil consumption' worries me.

The obvious answer is to probably walk away, but do you think I can take a punt given the car is worth £8300? Could I get a three year extended warranty for £800?

An aftermarket warranty cannot cover a problem that is already present in the car. People say that the oil rings problem is very much dependent on the way the car is driven, the harder the better. The problem derived from VAG filling the engines with synthetic oil on the line. VAG used to pride itself on filling cars on the line with reclaimed 'running in' oil, that worked.
