Do runflats really work?

I'm thinking of changing my 13 year old Vauxhall Omega Estate and find that most potential replacements do not have a spare wheels and use run flat tyres.

I understand how they work but have failed to find out what to do in the event of a puncture on a 600 mile run to Scotland or Southern France in the middle of the night. Do car breakdown services supply new tyres?

They quote 50 miles to cover themselves, but runflats have been driven 300 miles. Obviously that destroys them and they need to be replaced rather than repaired, but you are not strictly limited to 50 miles. The main problem is France on a Sunday when most tyre shops are shut, but since most BMWs are now on runflats, as long as you stick to sensible standard sizes, you should be able to get replacements.
