Do you think I could negotiate a good discount on a used or new Vauxhall Zafira or Ford S-Max?

Is this a good time to buy secondhand or new as a cash buyer? We want to buy a decent 7-seater and have narrowed it down to a Vauxhall Zafira or Ford S-Max. Ideally we want a high spec one (leather seats would be nice!) and have a budget of between £10,000 and £15,000 for something up to three years old and with a low mileage. What is the best way to go about this?

I can see Vauxhall do big discounts on a basic model, and have seen some reasonable prices for secondhand cars online. How much of a discount do you think I could negotiate with a main dealer, given that I'm a cash buyer and am willing to buy in July rather than wait for the new plate? I also have a battered P-reg Mercedes-Benz E240 estate to trade in, but I doubt it is worth more than £1000, if that.

Sales were a surprising 10.9 per cent up in June. I don't think you'll get a new S-Max for £15,000, but it's worth checking with www.drivethedeal.com. For used, try www.cargiant.co.uk.

It's also worth contacting the London cab firm Addison Lee to ask about current shape Galaxy and old shape Sharans coming off its fleet.
