Where can I get a 4x4 with better fuel economy than my Ford Kuga?

I bought a Ford Kuga 20 months ago and really enjoy it. I drive 40,000 to 50,000 miles a year, mostly on the motorway, and I need space for materials, power for safe overtaking, decent economy, good handling and ride comfort. Occasionally I go off road (not too tough a terrain) for kayaking. I love the ride height, handling and style of the Kuga, but the fuel economy is appalling and nowhere near that publicised. My average is 35mpg which is a sad reflection of Ford's claim of 40+mpg motoring. Looking at the Kuga online forum it would appear that I am not alone here. What similar vehicle could you recommend that actually delivers its claim of 40+mpg? If I have to go back to an estate car to get decent mpg then I will, but if possible my preference would be something with the ride height of the Kuga and 4x4 capability for muddy conditions.

If you use economy driving techniques you could get 40 - 45, but you won't with a kayak on top. See the economy driving video on this site.
