Where can I get a replacement key for my Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

My 1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has an electronic key which also doubles as a remote control for the central locking. One day it suddenly refused to work, luckily at home where I could use the spare key. It wasn't the batteries. I have been told I will have to pay £240 for a new key. Isn't there anywhere I can get the old key re-programmed to work?
