Why is my Citroen C3 running slow and losing power?

My 2002 Citroen C3 1.4 HDI is running slow, suffers a loss of power, and won't go above 3000rpm. It starts easily but it won't tick over straight away. I have to hold the revs a little higher for a minute or so, and after that it ticks over as normal. Has anyone out there had this fault or know what the problem could be?

There are a number of reasons for this, but I would suggest that you check the basics first. Is the fuel filter blocked or dirty? Do you have low fuel pressure from your fuel tank? Do you have a electric pump to pump the fuel to the HPP (high pressure pump) or does the HPP draw fuel from the tank? Either way, you need to check the pressure which should be approximately 2 bar. Also investigate possible EGR problems and air intake problems.
