Which medium diesel 4x4 will give 40mpg or more?

We own a 1997 Subaru Legacy which is in need of replacement. We'd have another for its all-round ability, but the fuel consumption of the petrol models (diesel is too new to be in budget) precludes this. For around £12,000, which used estate or 4x4 will give 40+mpg overall, be comfy for two bad backs on long journeys and will tow a small boat and trailer up a slippery launch ramp?
