Would wider tyres help my car to stop more rapidly?

My car came with 185 tires. If I exchange them for wider tires such as 205s, will I be able to achieve shorter stopping distances? What about road holding? Will I sacrifice fuel consumption?

The rolling circumference of the tyres on the wheels must be the same or your speedometer will under-read. If you switch to bigger wheels with wider, lower profile tyres, you might enjoy marginally more cornering grip, but fuel consumption will increase and the car might slide more in the wet or in snowy or icy conditions. But all of this can also depend on the tyres you fit.
