Why is my 1998 Volkswagen Polo losing power when wet?

My 1998 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 CL loses power in the wet. Any ideas why this might be? It started happening after driving through a particularly deep puddle in the road. Then, once again, following a down pour, the car just ground to a halt losing power and the AA had to tow me home. Stopping halfway due to the AA man reaching his maximum miles, I tried the car again and it was fine, so I drove it to my destination.
