I refer to a recent e-mail about talking a car to Poland. I have been driving a vehicle (usually a Mercedes Sprinter) to Poland every winter since 1992, and here are a few observations you may want to pass on: The great majority of hotels - certainly those used by Westerners - have "guarded" car parks. Often the use of the car park is included in the cost of the hotel room, though with some larger/chain-type hotels it is an extra. You are strongly advised when parking overnight to always use these guarded parks. The rest of the time we are staying in remote forest lodges where theft is not a problem. I have been broken into once (January 2004) and had a lot of valuable stuff stolen (lap-top, optics). This was in broad daylight at a major shopping centre on west side of Warsaw. (The vehicle was not alarmed, that would probably have been enough to dissuade the thieves.) The same shopping centre now has a security guard patrolling it constantly. Nevertheless, if there are two of you, I would be inclined to have one stay in the car while the other shopped. At many roadside restaurants you can park your car in view of the restaurant and I don't think theft is a problem there. The document you should always have accessible is your PASSPORT. Seeing a right-hand-drive vehicle, the police may think it's stolen and stop you. Once they see your UK passport, they assume all is well. I've never had a Polish policeman ask me for other documents (licence, insurance, etc.) though of course I have these handy.
