Should I avoid a Ford Transit that has intermittent black smoke from the exhaust?

I'm looking at buying a Ford Transit Mk6 with 68K on the clock for £6k. Partially converted camper. All is well except intermittent black smoke. The owner says he has changed filters and been to two separate garages about the smoke who both said it's just the age of the van and not to worry about it. I want to use this for a family camper for a good few years so my question is - is this van about to die or is the black smoke really nothing to worry about ?

The 2.4 diesel in Transits of this age can be quite smoky, especially if they've not been used much on open roads and have spent a lot of time in traffic. You'll probably find it gets a lot clearer if you run. tank of injector cleaner through it. If you're planning on keeping it for a long time, then of far greater importance with a Mk6 Transit is to protect it from going rusty – they do like to rot, so rustproofing treatment is highly recommended.
