Changing tyre size

I would like to know if it is feasable to fit a different size tyre to my 2010 Skoda Octavia VRS (petrol) as the current tyre size (225/40 R18 92Y) is uncomfortable and noisy on roads other than motorway tarmac.

Also, would a size change affect the speedometer reading? I appreciate that this car is a hot hatch, but as an older driver I would accept a slight reduction in roadholding to obtain a more comfortable ride on B roads!

You would have to go down a wheel size or two, assuming the will fit round the brakes. Can't simply put deeper profile tyres on the 18" wheels.
